ESA ignores online event and confirms E3 2022 has been cancelled

GamesBeat Summit 2022 returns with its biggest event for gaming leaders on April 26-28. Reserve your spot here!

The Entertainment Software Association today confirmed that the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) event for 2022 is being canceled.

The ESA had already indicated that it would not hold a physical event in Los Angeles and is considering replacing it with an online event. But now the online event is cancelled.

I had already heard that competition from Geoff Keighley’s online Summer Game Fest, which returns in June, was making it difficult for digital E3 to gain traction. The priority is to return to a hands-on experience at a personal event.

In a statement to GamesBeat, the ESA said:

E3 returns in 2023 with a revived showcase celebrating new and exciting video games and industry innovations.

We previously announced that E3 will not be held in person in 2022 due to the lingering health concerns surrounding COVID-19. Today we are announcing that there will also be no E3 digital showcase in 2022.

Instead, we will devote all of our energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer. Whether you’re enjoying the show floor or your favorite devices, the 2023 showcase will bring community, media and industry back together in an all-new format and interactive experience.

We look forward to presenting E3 2023 live from Los Angeles to fans around the world.

Stay tuned for more news and announcements coming soon.

The ESA made some additional comments indicating that it hopes to somehow revive the event when it resumes in 2023.

“Our members count on the ESA to deliver an experience that revitalizes the event in a new and exciting way. That’s why we’re using this time to shape plans for 2023 and work with our members to ensure the revitalized showcase sets a new standard for hybrid industry events and fan engagement,” the ESA said. “We look forward to the individual showcases planned for 2022 and will celebrate and promote the new titles presented together with the community. ESA has made the decision to concentrate its resources and use this time to shape our plans and deliver an entirely new experience that will delight fans who have the highest expectations of the most important event in video games.”
