February 2022 NPD hardware: Switch surpasses supply-limited competition

GamesBeat Summit 2022 returns with its biggest event for gaming leaders on April 26-28. Reserve your spot here!

Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware of February in the United States, according to industry tracking company The NPD Group. This applies to both unit sales and dollar sales. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series X/S had surpassed the PlayStation in both stats. Xbox and PlayStation are both severely limited in supply. Microsoft and Sony sell every single system they put in the retail chain. So, as usual, this is hardly a measure of sales, but a measure of the number of systems each company ships to the United States.

The availability of new-generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony is so limited that hardware sales fell significantly year-on-year.

“Video game hardware sales fell 27% compared to February 2021 to $295 million,” Piscatella said. “Year-to-date dollar revenue is 5% lower than a year ago at $685 million. The hardware market remains in a supply-limited state.”

Now is not the time to report a problem for PlayStation 5. Well, apart from the delivery issues. That system is still the best performing device of the year in dollar terms.

“PlayStation 5 is so far leading the video game hardware in $2022,” said Piscatella. “Switch achieved the highest unit sales in the period.”
