India’s Mobile Premier League made a move to Europe this week when it acquired GameDuell, maker of casual online skill games.
MPL now has a global presence in Europe, Asia and North America. Bengalaru, India-based MPL became a new unicorn in mobile esports when it raised a $150 million funding round against a $2.3 billion valuation in September. Not bad for a company founded in 2018 by Sai Srinivas and Shubh Malhotra.
And it has used some of that money to acquire GameDuell in Berlin, Germany, as it expands its business in key global markets. It is interesting to see how Indian companies, such as educational gaming company Byju’s, are buying up western companies in the gaming business. It is a sign of the maturity of the Indian gaming ecosystem and capital markets.
GameDuell has 40 casual online skill games available in seven languages. They include community card and board games, a cross-platform gaming community.
This move also marks MPL’s foray into the mobile free-to-play space. MPL is focused on exploring multiple segments to bring gaming and esports experiences to users. GameDuell’s management team are also delighted for their deep experience in building multiplayer games such as board, action arcade and puzzle games for both an Indian and global audience across the web, social and mobile platforms. MPL has more than 1,000 employees in six cities and has raised $375 million to date. All together it has more than 70 games.
MPL has more than 1,000 employees.
About this partnership, Sai Srinivas, CEO of MPL, said in a statement: “We are excited to expand our business into Europe after successfully venturing into Indonesia and the US. We believe that our partnership with GameDuell gives us the right will provide strategic support and expertise to this new journey forward and help us continue to provide an exemplary gaming experience for both India and the world. We welcome the incredibly talented GameDuell team on board and together we look forward to bringing the best gaming experience create experiences and grow the mobile F2P segment.”
GameDuell specializes in skill-based casual games.
GameDuell’s top titles include games like Fluffy, Bubble Speed, Jungle Jewels, Grand Gin Rummy, Belote, and Solitaire. GameDuell CEO Kai Bolik said in an email to GamesBeat that his company has 120 employees. I’ve corresponded with Bolik for about 14 years or more, pretty much since I’ve been with GamesBeat.
Bolik started his company in 2003.
