Position Location: Hybrid preferred; remote considered: Most Brookings positions are hybrid, combining regular in-person presence at our Washington, DC, office with the option of at least two days of remote work each week. We will prioritize candidates in or willing to relocate to the DC area for hybrid work, but will also consider remote applicants. Remote work applicants may not work from the following states: Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Michigan, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington.
Operating status: Brookings eligible employees are currently authorized to work remotely but will be moving towards a hybrid plan later this year, which will require working both in the office and remotely. All vaccinated Brookings employees who wish to work from the office can do so. Brookings policies on masks and other pandemic mitigation measures will continue to be informed by DC and CDC guidelines.
Vaccine Policy: Brookings has made the safety of our staff and our surrounding community a top priority. As part of that commitment, Brookings staff are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Brookings will require all staff and visitors to submit proof of complete vaccination against COVID-19 to be in Brookings buildings.

The Graphic Design & Web Publishing Coordinator is responsible for supporting digital efforts regarding designing, publishing, and maintaining all digital content for Brookings Metro. The position, reporting to Brookings Metro’s Communications Director, leads day-to-day graphic design and website publishing efforts. The position is not intended to focus on social media management. The position serves as the branding lead for Brookings Metro and provides creative ideas and execution for new products. The position provides project management support on production of all Brookings Metro publications and high-profile projects.
Graphic Design and Production (45%)
Serves as lead graphic designer for Brookings Metro on all visual elements, including generating graphs, tables and maps; full-length PDF reports; infographics; event promotion graphics; and branded content.
Uses Adobe InDesign and Illustrator to create compelling graphics, page layouts, and design templates for scholarly research publications, including full-length PDF reports.
Helps coordinate the development of Brookings Metro brand and marketing collateral.
Works with Brookings Metro’s Communications Director and Brookings Central Communications to ensure adherence to Brookings’s visual style guide.
Web Publishing & Analytics (45%)
Web Content Production
Creates, updates and maintains all Brookings Metro webpages in accordance with Brookings website standards and consistent with program’s research and communications goals. These include blog posts, reports, research briefs, essays, events, bio pages, and more.
Assist with the conceptualization, development, and maintenance of new web-based content, features, and tools.
Drafts summary copy language to accompany website content.
Drafts and manages Brookings Metro’s newsletters using email marketing platforms.
Serves as the Brookings Metro liaison to the Brookings Central Communications design and web teams.
Works with Brookings Metro’s Communications Director to keep staff apprised of new website features and issues of concern as appropriate.
Applies taxonomy and other metadata to optimize content presentation on various parts of Brookings Metro’s webpages.
Analytics and Insights
Serves as Brookings Metro’s web analytics authority.
Monitors web analytics tools to provide feedback and prepare internal reporting on web readership and engagement.
Recommends sound search engine optimization practices for Brookings Metro content.
Coordinates the production of quarterly and yearly analytics reports for internal distribution.
Communications Strategy & Creative Leadership (10%)
Working with Brookings Metro’s Communications Director, maintain—and encourage colleague adherence to—Brookings’s brand and visual guidelines.
Brainstorms creative ways in which Brookings Metro can raise its visibility with core audiences and grow its website visitors, email subscribers, and social media followers.
Supports project management, organization, and branding for high profile Brookings Metro projects.
Maintains proficiency in graphic design and web publishing practices, and provides communications strategy based on analytics and digital knowledge.

Education/Experience Requirements:
Successful candidates will have a professional background in graphic design and web publishing, and possess strong writing, editing, and multimedia skills. Minimum of two years’ relevant experience. Exceptional project and time management skills, an obsessive attention to detail, and the ability to work well under pressure, within tight deadlines, and with minimal supervision as part of a team are a must. Interest in public policy, and/or urban and metropolitan policy is a plus. Think tank, nonprofit or public relations agency experience is a plus. Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.
Knowledge/Skills Requirements:
Strong understanding of, and experience with, content management systems, including WordPress. Strong understanding of, and experience with, Adobe Creative Suite, including Illustrator and InDesign. Understanding of email marketing platforms, such as Mailchimp and Hubspot. Ability to problem solve and do relevant research and web analysis required. Strong oral and written communications skills a must. Strong experience with the following: HTML, WordPress, Microsoft Office, Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. Must be able to learn other new technology applications for communications and design. Must have strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Must have high initiative, strong interpersonal skills, discretion, and mature judgment. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment.
