Job Description : | Requisition Id 7486 Overview: Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites candidates to apply for a senior graphic artist position in the Communications Division to provide support to the Neutron Sciences Directorate at the laboratory. We seek a candidate with extraordinary graphic design talent who relishes the challenge of creating original engaging and inspiring designs that convey complex scientific and technological advances. In this role, you will need to work both independently and collaborate with other members of the communications team to produce timely designs that illustrate and illuminate communications materials for distribution to the US Department of Energy (DOE) and both general and targeted audiences. Under minimal supervision you will develop thought-provoking designs that convey the laboratory’s world-class research using modern tools and techniques. Major Duties/Responsibilities: Work proficiently in software programs including Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and PowerPoint. Illustrate scientific research by collaborating with scientists and researchers to understand and communicate complex subject matter through clear and effective design solutions, with visualization and illustration for journal covers and stories a priority. Work closely with communications leads and internal customers to apply graphics expertise to produce timely and visually effective communications tools for distribution to internal and external stakeholders including coworkers and peers, industry, academia, government sponsors, and the public at large. Participate in planning for and production of significant deliverables, such as dynamic presentations, art for digital platforms (website, social media), fact sheets, reports and other publications, brochures, digital signage, posters, infographics, objects, renderings, and collateral for high-profile visits. Prioritize requests, coordinate and schedule workflow, and facilitate production with printers or other vendors to meet tight, demanding deadlines and ensure cost-effectiveness while maintaining contact with communications leads and customers. Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements. Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics. Occasionally develop large-scale exhibit and display materials. Follow internal review processes to ensure highest quality products. Engage with team members in all areas of the communications process and contribute to the overall mission. Qualifications Required: A minimum of an associate degree in art, graphic design, or related field with 7 to 10 years of experience. (Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.) The successful candidate must have excellent attention to detail; the ability to understand, follow, and implement complex instructions; strong organizational skills, including the flexibility to handle multiple assignments for multiple customers simultaneously; excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to visualize and illustrate original, complex designs; and some web design familiarity. Successful candidate must have the ability to: prioritize and meet deadlines; identify opportunities to delegate or assume tasks as needed; and work—both independently and with all levels of researchers and staff—in a team-based environment. Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills critical. Solutions-oriented individuals a must. Work will involve various physical requirements and certain working conditions and as such a post offer, pre-hire physical will be required. Qualifications Desired: Science-based work experience and a bachelor’s degree are strongly preferred. Expert skills in multipage layout and design and familiarity with 3D modeling software preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel also desired.
