Overwatch 2 will start testing soon

GamesBeat Summit 2022 returns with its biggest event for gaming leaders on April 26-28. Reserve your spot here!

Overwatch was once the new brand in gaming. In recent years, the property has gone cold while updates to the original game have slowed down and development of the sequel has lagged.

Today, Blizzard announced that Overwatch 2’s PvP modes will be tested soon. This starts with a closed alpha, open to a select few like Blizzard employees and Overwatch League players, starting this week. After that, a closed beta will start at the end of April. You can register for this here.

Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller notes in a new developer update video (above) that the team is decoupling Overwatch 2’s PVP mode from the co-op features. This means that the competitive aspect of the team-based shooter will start before the cooperative experience.

The Overwatch 2 test introduces new heroes, maps and modes. It also brings an important change as matches will now feature two teams of five players instead of six.

Overwatch fans have been waiting a long time for important content. In addition, Blizzard has had a volatile year, with reports of sexism and abuse in the workplace. Many Overwatch fans have lost interest in the game, and that’s the environment Blizzard unleashes Overwatch 2.
