According to a new study by Gartner, Inc. Seventy percent of American consumers want to use AI in their work. In nine categories of work tasks, more employees wanted AI to help than wanted AI to do all or nothing. The majority would like AI to help with tasks such as reducing errors (58%), solving problems (57%), discovering information and simplifying processes (both 56%).

More than half (57%) of US workers wanted AI to perform two or more of those tasks. A smaller group, 18% of employees, wanted AI to perform five or more tasks – think of these people as the ‘robot welcomeers’.

But while employees are interested in AI to help them, they still want to stay in control of these solutions, rather than have them run automatically for tasks like personalizing services and messages or solving problems. Employees also hope to maintain control over how their data is used to train such AI solutions.

Gartner found that respondents preferred AI to help them with tasks such as reducing errors, solving problems, discovering information and simplifying processes. Gartner found that respondents preferred AI to help them with tasks such as reducing errors, solving problems, discovering information and simplifying processes.

However, not all consumers want to use AI at work. Among respondents who did not want to use AI at work, privacy and security concerns were cited as the top two reasons for rejecting AI. Other reasons for rejecting AI are that people prefer human interaction or are unsure of the benefit of AI. In particular, people who trust their employer are more likely to use AI at work than people who are less trusting.

Gartner recommends IT leaders interested in using AI solutions in the workplace to gain support for this technology by demonstrating that AI is not meant to replace or take over the workforce. Rather, it can help employees be more effective and work on higher value tasks. Require AI to primarily include first responders by helping them make decisions rather than eliminating them and quelling fears by directly communicating how AI will affect employee privacy.

For this report, Gartner surveyed 1,515 respondents from the US in October and November 2021 to measure consumer and employee attitudes to AI.
