A new report from Jellyfish shows tech teams are shifting more time and resources to work that drives growth and innovation. Despite the numerous challenges tech teams have faced over the past two years, teams have both adapted and started collaborating more virtually as remote and hybrid work models proliferate, and they are looking to expand their workforces to stay ahead of innovation. stimulate. More than 79% of tech leaders expect their teams to grow by 2022, while 57% of respondents expect more than 10% workforce growth.

When asked about their top priorities in 2022, 36% of engineering leaders said improving the engineering team’s operations, tools and processes is their primary focus. When asked to name this year’s biggest challenges, 45% of leaders said “ensuring everyone is focused on their top priority work” is at the top of the list, indicating greater focus will be placed on reducing the volume of unplanned work. Other challenges cited included employee onboarding, virtual onboarding and recruiting.

The data also shows that virtual collaboration has increased by more than 20% as teams embrace remote and hybrid work models. Leaders reported productivity gains from this increase in virtual collaboration, with 44% of tech leaders reporting productivity gains as a result of remote working.

To compile the findings in the 2022 State of Engineering Management, the Jellyfish Research team analyzed the work of more than 23,000 engineers, while surveying hundreds of engineering leaders to understand the current state of engineering management. The survey was conducted in February and March 2022.
