Report: Cloud automation is key to future-proof cybersecurity

With hybrid working becoming the new normal, companies are recognizing that people won’t be returning to the office full-time anytime soon. IT environments are changing, with continuous migration from on-premise systems to hybrid or multicloud environments. The complexity of diverse environments challenges IT teams to implement and manage consistent security policies. In fact, many companies have spent the past two years trying to achieve or maintain stability in a storm of uncertainty and rapid change. But what about the future? As businesses look to the horizon, the focus must shift from mere survival to thriving. This is evident from Delinea’s latest research that examines how companies are tackling the challenges of future-proofing.
Delinea’s research explores the important, but sometimes misunderstood and undervalued topic of future-proofing. It reveals the challenges a security industry faces and points to a balanced path of expertise and automation to guide our work.
The report finds that cloud automation is seen as the key to future-proof cybersecurity, especially when combined with autonomous privileges and access. The good news? Eighty-six percent of respondents are exploring ways to automate access controls, especially for privileged access. But even with 68% of respondents seeing increases in budgets and staffing, they still face increasing threats from an expanding threat landscape that is challenging to address. Fifty-nine percent of respondents say increasingly complex multi-cloud IT environments are driving their need to future-proof their access security by 2022.
But the research reveals a conundrum: Too much faith in security preparedness can lead to a security disaster. The research found that future-proofing becomes even more important when organizations gain too much confidence in their security measures. Despite the challenges ahead and knowing that automation will be critical to their future success, 83% of respondents are confident in their current access controls, even if two in three companies admit to being a victim of cyber-attacks.
As cloud migration accelerates, the pressure to manage critical systems in an increasingly complex, dispersed and vulnerable IT environment will continue to grow. Hybrid solutions are becoming mandatory. As the volume of activities and risk scenarios increase, we will likely rely more heavily on machine learning and autonomous security controls that require no human intervention at all. This applies to both on-premises and cloud scenarios.
They are the most informed, most forward-thinking leaders who will select the most effective security investments to prepare their organizations for future success. The better prepared you are for the long term, the more agile and resilient you will be in a time of rapid change.
The report analyzed responses from more than 300 business IT decision-makers through a survey conducted in February 2022 by Census-wide, a global research firm.
