The term of DSGMC is four years, formed through elections conducted by Directorate of Gurdwara Elections of Delhi Government. Of over a million Sikhs living in Delhi, around 450,000 are registered voters for the DSGMC elections. DSGMC has opened many schools, polytechnics and khalsa colleges for imparting education.

DSGMC president and SAD leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa lost to Harvinder Singh Sarna of the Akali Dal (Delhi) in Punjabi Bagh by 469 votes. However, he is likely to become the Sikh body's president again as the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee ( SGPC) nominated him as a member of the DSGMC on Wednesday evening.
