Splatoon 3 Takes Over Xenoblade’s September Release Date

GamesBeat Summit 2022 returns with its biggest event for gaming leaders on April 26-28. Reserve your spot here!

Nintendo will launch Splatoon 3 for Switch on September 9. Because of this, the game will be released just before the fall equinox, meaning the publisher was able to make the summer release it promised fans last year. For Nintendo, which has faced some criticism for its treatment of contract workers, this will ensure the Switch gets a big release just before the holidays.

Of course, it seems likely that Splatoon 3 would be released earlier in the summer. Earlier this week, Nintendo pushed back the release date of Xenoblade Chronicles 3. That game comes out on July 29. Nintendo originally planned to launch it in September. It seems plausible that Nintendo switched those games to give Splatoon 3 extra development time.

Splatoon 3 is available for pre-order starting today. The multiplayer shooter series originally debuted on the Wii U, where it became one of Nintendo’s biggest new IPs in years. In the main game mode, Splatoon has teams of squid kids (kids who are squids) who fight for grass by shooting ink on the ground. The side that occupies the most territory wins. Splatoon 2 expanded that with even more modes and a robust, eye-catching single-player campaign.

For this new sequel, Nintendo seems to be bringing back all of its favorite gameplay modes, weapons, and gear. In the new trailer, which you can watch at the top of this page, you can also get a glimpse of new weapons and clothing for your squid kid.

But a question remains about how many new things fans will get in Splatoon 3. While Splatoon 2 was a full-blown sequel due to its single-player mode, the online multiplayer felt like a Deluxe version of what came before. And it worked because few people owned a Wii U. But after 12 million sales for Splatoon 2, a much larger audience is waiting for what Nintendo EPD 5 has in store in terms of surprises.
