Bethesda Game Studios showed a little bit more of Starfield today, including revealing that players can take on the role of a space jester.
In a promotional video, senior leads sat down on Starfield to discuss various aspects of the game. As part of this conversation, game director Todd Howard has broken down some factions for players to join. One of the more alluring factions is a group of space pirates called “The Crimson Fleet”.
For most players, The Crimson Fleet will act as an enemy or obstacle. But because Bethesda wants players to create their own story, they allow them to join the group. This led to design director Emil Pagliarulo clarifying that even if you play as one of these “bad guys”, you can still play as a “good guy”… by reporting the pirates to the police.
“The cool thing about The Crimson Fleet – what if you don’t want to play as the villain. You can side with the pirates or you can report to your superiors and basically be a space agent of sorts. So it lets you be a good person while playing with the bad guys. I think that’s really cool.”
It’s actually not “cool”. I can’t think of a bigger sucker in the universe than someone who talks about space pirates in a video game. And yet it’s neat that the game is good for even the dumbest among us.
Just never tell anyone you played as an agent in Starfield unless you need a wedgie.
